Laser Hair Removal

Traditional hair removal techniques such as shaving, plucking, and waxing provide only temporary relief. Electrolysis, while effective, often requires years of ongoing, expensive treatments. In addition, plucking and waxing can stimulate hair follicles and promote more vigorous growth, and each of these approaches often results in scarring, allergic reactions, and ingrown hairs.

Laser hair removal targets the pigment inside the hair follicle without damaging the delicate pore or surrounding structure and skin. For this reason, it is a safe, effective way to eliminate unwanted hair anywhere on the body.

Consultation
Consultation includes a thorough discussion of your desires, expectations, and concerns as well as limits and risks of the procedure. The surgeon will review your medical history and recommend an approach that will be suitable for you. He or she also will carefully examine your skin and advise you about how long it will take to eliminate the hair.

Candidates
The best candidates for laser hair removal are men and women who are dissatisfied with having unwanted or excess hair on any part of the body.

The Procedure
A device (or laser) that produces high-energy light is used to target the melanin pigment within a hair shaft. The laser produces heat in the air that is transferred to the hair follicle, causing the follicle to become inflamed. This process signals the follicle to become dormant (or no longer produce hair growth).

The type of laser your surgeon will use depends on your skin and hair color. A single treatment may reduce thickness and density of hair and multiple treatments can permanently eliminate hair.

Recovery and Results
There is no special preparation for or recovery from laser hair removal. The procedure should, however, be avoided if you have a suntan or sunburn. Shaving enough to leave visible stubble can quicken treatment time. You should not bleach or pluck the hairs at least 2 weeks before treatment. If you have cold sores or genital herpes, you should begin taking the appropriate medications before your laser hair removal.

After your treatment, you are likely to have some redness and bumps. You may use a cold compress to reduce the swelling and redness. Until your hair follicles have had a chance to heal for 2 to 3 days, you should:

* Use little or no make up
* Use moisturizer that your surgeon has approved
* Use a sun block with an SPF of 25 or more
* Avoid all other hair removal approaches except shaving to manage unwanted hair
* Gently exfoliate treated areas with a loofah or washcloth (do not scrub)

After repeated (an average of 4 to 7) treatments, laser hair removal is permanent; however, many patients have yearly or biyearly maintenance sessions to ensure that no unwanted hairs return.

Most patients suggest they are extremely pleased and often relieved to have undergone the treatment.
