Look Good and Feeling Great!
By Hitesh R. Patel, M.D.

How many times have we looked in the mirror and not been satisfied by what we see? It’s frustrating…a pimple here, a line there…unwanted hair in the most unsightly places. All too often these little imperfections get the best of us, getting us to spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on make-up, depilatories, and other products that never REALLY take care of the problem, right? Well, luckily, those solutions that we thought were out of our reach, either because of expense or availability, are within our grasp now more than ever. Cosmetic and laser medicine, once reserved for only the affluent and elite, have become much more effective, safe, and convenient…and affordable. Two of the more popular procedures in these fields are microdermabrasion and laser hair removal. Let’s take a closer look at these exciting innovations.

Microdermabrasion is used to remove acne scarring, hyper pigmented lesions, to achieve glowing healthy skin, and for almost any other skin problem. It can be used on the face, back, arms and anywhere on the body. It helps to make the skin look “flawless”. It can be used on men, women and children. Many patients have said they did not think it was possible to remove their acne scars were amazed at the results. The recommended treatment course is approximately four 25-minute treatments spaced two weeks apart from one another.

Let’s talk about how lasers work. Lasers work by delivering energy that is selectively absorbed by different structures depending on the pure wavelength energy used. The most important breakthrough has been effective laser hair removal in our skin types. One to two years ago, people with any color in their skin were getting burned during laser treatment. Laser hair removal works by the laser energy being selectively absorbed by the bulb of the hair follicle due to its pigment or color. The problem is our skin also contains the pigment, and the cells of our skin were absorbing the energy as well and getting burned. The new lasers use a wavelength, 1064 nm, in which the energy is only selectively absorbed by the deeper pigment of the hair follicle bulb and not by our actual skin pigment. As a result, laser hair removal is an extremely safe and effective option for our population.

Each treatment time varies from ten minutes to one hour. Generally, the laser energy will feel like a small pinch on the skin. There is no downtime with most lasers, and you can resume most normal activities the same day.
Lastly, here are some things to take into consideration when thinking about laser therapy:
• Is the doctor qualified in laser medicine? Does he/she have experience with the treatment?
• Is he/she familiar with the needs (medical, cosmetic, and otherwise) of patients in the South Asian community?
• Is the equipment that the doctor is using appropriate for my skin type?

Every person is different and some people are not bothered by little imperfections. If you are not bothered, don’t worry about it. If you are bothered by them, these treatments will definitely show you an improvement. You may feel that laser treatment or microdermabrasion is a great option for you, but the financial concerns attached are simply too overwhelming. However, in your daily life, you may be investing money in alternatives that may seem inexpensive at present. Since these alternatives are not, by any means, permanent, they require maintenance…and that can prove to be just as, or even more, costly. For example, with hair removal, financially speaking, if you calculate your expense for waxing, chemicals, makeup, time, etc., in the long run, the price of laser treatment for permanent removal of the problem, as opposed to a temporary “fix”, will probably be comparable, if not less expensive.

The convenience of these procedures is an added bonus for many. Most pro¬cedures can be performed on an individual’s lunch break from work or in-between classes (for students), returning him/her to his/her daily routine with minimal recuperation time. For instance, a typical microdermabrasion facial treatment requires a simple half-hour office visit, after which one can go right back to work/school.
Always go for a consultation, and be comfortable with the doctor before having any procedures. Ask the doctor where he trained for cosmetic medicine. Remember, you will never know what can be done if you don’t ask.
