Laser Hair Removal

Ohana utilizes state-of-the-art laser technology to achieve superior results in permanent hair reduction. This treatment is an excellent choice for women and men who have unwanted hair on their face and neck, arms, underarms, back, legs, bikini area, hands and feet. Our medical doctor will be able to tailor the treatment regimen for all skin types and most hair colors.

Unwanted hair is a real problem for many people. It can make you self-conscious and limit the choice of clothes you wear. It can also be a pain to deal with - endless plucking and shaving, and still the problem keeps on coming back. Even electrolysis proves time-consuming, expensive and uncomfortable. Thank goodness for laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal is widely regarded as the safest and most effective form of hair removal on the market today. Treatments are highly effective, safe and fast. It uses a simple beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle, disabling the follicle without affecting the surrounding skin.

A course of four to six treatments is usually required with the procedure suitable for men and women and all areas of the body. After that, a maintenance laser hair removal treatment once or twice a year is often all that's required to keep the problem at bay and eliminate the need for shaving and waxing.

Women frequently want treatment on their bikini area, underarms, legs and upper lip. Men often ask for help with their back and shoulders and also their neck area where shaving can cause rashes and razor burns.

How Hair Grows
Hair grows in 3 cycles: Active, dormant and shedding/falling out stage. Laser hair removal is effective during the active stage, which is why multiple treatments are necessary to achieve desired results. The hair follicle absorbs the laser light and then converts to heat. The heat damages the follicle and destroys its ability to re-grow. Significantly less hair grows back with each treatment… ultimately resulting in your goal of permanent hair reduction. Your skin, hair color, coarseness of hair as well as age and metabolism all influence hair growth. This treatment may not be performed during pregnancy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Laser Hair Removal

How do lasers work?
A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. Different types of lasers produce different colors of light.

The light emitted by a laser is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) located in hair follicles (melanin pigments give hair its color) and hair shaft. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to vaporize the pigment - disabling several hair follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair's regrowth - but not long enough to damage the surrounding skin. Our lasers have special cooling mechanisms such as contact-cooling which protects the epidermis (upper layer of skin). This patented method of epidermal preservation allows delivery of more laser energy deeper into the hair follicle.

Additionally, we have several lasers to treat a broad range of skin types. Based on the characteristics of your skin and hair, Dr. Chin will choose a laser that is best for you. We have lasers that work with lighter skin types, as well as lasers specially designed to be safe with dark skin types and tanned skin.

Can I have any area of my body treated?
Yes. The most popular problem areas for women include the upper lip, bikini area, underarms and legs. The only area which is not recommended for laser hair removal is around the eyes.

Can men have the treatment?
Certainly! Many of our clients are men. They have found laser hair removal the ideal long term solution to getting rid of unwanted hair on the back and shoulders. It¹s also very effective on the neck area where shaving rashes and razor burns can prove a real problem.

Does it hurt?
You'll feel only a mild sensation which clients describe as being like an elastic band being flicked against the skin.

How many treatments will I need?
It depends on the coarseness of your hair and the size of your hair follicles. On average, a course of 4 to 6 treatments is necessary for the best results.

Do you have to shave prior to treatment?
The area of treatment needs to be shaved, no plucking or tweezing.

Is laser hair removal safe?
Yes. Dr Chin has expertise in laser medicine and uses only the most advanced lasers. He will choose the laser that is best suited for your needs.

Are there any side effects?
Side effects are minimal and are generally limited to a slight redness of the skin which should not persist for more than a few hours.

Is treatment permanent?
On average, each laser treatment will be associated with 10 to 15 percent permanent hair loss. So in most cases, a reasonable degree of permanent hair removal can only be achieved after several treatments. The number of treatments will depend on each patient's individual response to laser surgery, and the amount of hair to be removed. The amount of hair reduction is affected by variables such as hormones, medication, ethnicity, metabolism and certain genetic factors. Remember that the goal may not be total hair removal. Many patients are happy with a reasonable degree of hair reduction. Also remember that the hair that remains is often lighter in color and thinner than the original hair prior to laser surgery. As with other treatments for unwanted hair, there is no guarantee that laser hair removal treatment will be permanent.

Is there a guarantee in laser hair removal?
It is impossible to predict the exact result a patient will achieve with laser hair removal, especially with regard to how many sessions a given individual will require. Many of the hair removal clinics which guaranteed results have gone out of business. Like most reputable medical practices, the most established laser hair removal practices do not guarantee results.

Who should not have laser hair removal?

* Patients with a recently acquired dark tan
* Blondes or redheads with any recent tan
* People of color with fine, light hair
* Anyone who has taken Accutane in the past 6 months
* Anyone taking Gold Therapy
* Anyone who cannot afford multiple sessions or is not motivated to go through a series of sessions at the necessary intervals.

Can laser hair removal be done on people of color?
The best results are obtained when the hair to be treated is darker than the surrounding skin. Also coarse hair is easier to remove. Fine, light hair in people of color is difficult to remove.

Can white or gray hair be treated with lasers?
White or gray hair in any complexion skin cannot be treated successfully with laser hair removal. Since lasers are attracted to the melanin in hair and gray hair has no melanin, lasers are not efficacious in treating gray hair. In fact, some people erroneously think that the laser treatments turned their hair gray. However, the laser has successfully removed the hair with pigment, leaving the gray or white hair remaining.
