Permanent Laser Hair Removal for Men & Women

For many people, the tedious and often painful routine of shaving, waxing and plucking unwanted hair has been replaced by safe, painless, highly effective, long-lasting and even permanent hair removal made possible by newer laser hair removal methods.

Why do I have more hair than others?
Excessive hair growth is seen in disorders of the adrenal glands and other medical conditions. Women sometimes experience a surge of hair growth due to hormonal changes in their bodies during pregnancy or menopause, or because of certain hormone or steroid medications.

Is there an alternative to traditional hair removal methods?
Traditional methods have been plucking, shaving, waxing, or the use of electrolysis or depilatories. These methods are temporary, painful, and short-term solutions to unwanted hair. For those seeking more long-term to permanent methods, the alternative is safe, painless, long-lasting and even permanent laser hair removal.

Patients who choose laser over other traditional methods of hair removal do so for a variety of reasons; primarily ones include the noninvasiveness of the procedure and its minimal associated discomfort and patient’s can immediately return to their normal activities.

What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a nonsurgical, noninvasive method for long-term to permanent hair removal. Using low energy, intense pulses of light from certain lasers, a dermatologic laser surgeon removes unwanted hair on all parts of the body, including the face, chest, arms, legs, back and bikini line. Part of the reason so many Americans are opting for laser hair removal is that the technology itself has been refined to near perfect standards over the past several years.

The four types of lasers and light devices we generally use are the?

* Alexandrite laser, a longer pulsed beam that reaches deeper into the skin to where follicles exist. (Gentlelase I and II, Apogee and these are Quantum).
* Q-Switched Nd: YAG lasers: One emits red light that reaches deeper follicles, the other emits green light that treats follicles closer to the surface.

Your skin color will determine which type of laser your doctor will use. Lighter skin tones call for the Gentlelase or Apogee whereas the Nd: YAG laser will generally be used to treat the darker skin-toned patients.

How does it work?
During the procedure, your doctor will direct the laser’s light energy at the hair; the energy passes through your skin and is absorbed by melanin. The energy heats up the melanin found in the hair bulb, disabling the bulb’s ability to further produce hair. In most cases, some re-growth may occur but with hair that is typically finer and lighter in color and less in number.

How many treatments are needed for laser hair removal?
Results can be seen with one treatment but due to the various stages of hair growth, optimum results require multiple treatments usually 3 to 7. The number of treatments will also depend upon what area is being targeted, the texture of the hair, as well as your skin and hair color.

Are there any side effects?
Most patients experience little discomfort from the lasers. During the procedure you may feel heat on the skin surrounding the involved area. The doctor can apply topical anesthetics, cool air, cooling gels, or ice packs to the skin to offset any discomfort. After the procedure, there may be temporary swelling or redness similar to a sun burn. In rare cases will there be pain, blisters, or skin discoloration. One should not have sun or a suntan prior to laser hair removal as it increases the risk for side effects.

How much does it cost?
Treatment cost will be determined by the size of the area being treated, with smaller areas costing less than larger areas. Call one of our offices for an individual consultation to obtain exact pricing. We also have packages for multiple treatment prices started at $150.
